HVAC To-Do List In Charleston from My Three Sons Heating & Air

With the holidays and 2024 in the rear view mirror, many Lowcountry home and property owners can now start cruising ahead to 2025 home improvement projects.

From new additions to remodeling, backyard construction projects to new flooring, the list of projects that can improve your home & lifestyle are virtually endless.

While many of those projects get a lot of attention, heating & air conditioning system replacements, modifications, installations and general repairs & maintenance can often get overlooked by many homeowners.

A big reason for this is many HVAC systems are often “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” – they quietly work in the background to make sure your family stays warm in the winter and cool & comfortable in the summer.

Because of their hidden background work, they usually don’t get the attention until it’s too late – when a system outright fails, and often during a peak weather times of year (either very hot & humid or very cold).

That said, if you want to get a leg up on 2025 this year and keep all of your home’s bases accounted for, here are some items that you can add to your home improvement list in 2025:

1. Understand What System Type You Have

One of the first things to do if you don’t already have the details is understanding what type of system (or systems) you have installed in your home.

We touched on a few of these in this post last year, but to summarize there are many different system types and configurations your home might have.

From a traditional central air conditioning system, to ductless mini-splits, to a packaged and split-type units, there are many different arrangements of components that keep your home comfortable year-round.

On top of the base configurations, your home may have additional components like dehumidiers and other indoor air quality items, so be sure to take an inventory of those as well.

2. Take Note Of System Age

Once you’ve taken note of the system type you have (and even the brand of system), it’s a good idea to get an understanding of your system’s age.

A system’s age is a critical measure – it can let you know if a system is running up against its usable (or effective) lifespan.

Older systems will need to be replaced sooner rather than later — the older a system is, it’s components will need more frequent repair or replacement.

As those repair costs add up they may approach the same cost as an outright replacement.

3. Add Filter, Register & Duct Cleaning To The List

With your notes on core system setup and age, next up is going to be looking at your air filters, ductwork and air vents/registers.

These are items important to the quality of your home’s indoor air quality – they help circulate and filter out the air in your home.

Regular filter replacements, duct and vent/register cleanings are important items to add to your list in 2025.

4. Move Planning (Current System & Future System)

If you’re planning on moving to a new home in 2025, it’s a good idea to have your current system checked out, as well as the system in your new home.

Getting a system replacement in your current home ensures the next homeowners are all set when they move in.

Having the system in your new home checked out is a great way to avoid any uncomfortable surprises that may arise after you get settled in.

5. Recruit A Lowcountry Local HVAC Company

Perhaps the best way to get all of the tips above off of your list is by hiring a local HVAC contractor to have your systems checked out.

They’ll be able to identify your system type, age, run through your air filters and identify any area of concern in your heating and air system.

You can also have them sign you up for a regular maintenance plan, that can include seasonal checks – before the warmer and cooler seasons – to make sure your system will be ready for those extreme weather seasons.

If you’re mapping out home improvement plans, it can be easy to miss out on heating & air related items.

I hope these tips above can get your New Year plans off on the right foot to having a cool & comfortable year in 2025.
