Stay Cool, Be Kind. Tips for keeping your family cool in the Lowcountry.

With summer here, we all know that means we’re in for extended periods of heat and humidity over the next few months here in the Lowcountry.

As you map out your summer, avoiding those elevated temps can be a challenge (almost impossible, really).

Whether you’re attending some local events for kids, sporting events, fishing, or just chilling at one of our wonderful beaches, you’ll be battling the heat this summer.

If you’re new to the area, below are some quick, simple tips for staying cool this summer.

If you’re a local here, you likely have a good plan for staying cool. But be sure to check out the list below just in case!

1. Start Plans Early Or Late In The Day

You’re going to have cooler temps in the mornings and evenings, so shaping your plans into those timeframes can help you escape some heat.

This isn’t always possible in some circumstances, of course, but rethinking some of your summer schedule ahead of time can help greatly in dodging those mid-day temperature peaks.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Being in the heat means you’ll likely be sweating more, so there’s a good chance you’ll get a little dehydrated.

Make sure you replenish those fluids and bring extra water with you when you’re out and about with your family this summer.

3. Portable Misting Fans

Especially nice if you find yourself outside this summer, misting fans offer a fun way for your family to stay cool.

Misting fans mix a traditional fan with a “mist” of water that allows you to get a cool, refreshing breeze as you navigate your way between events.

4. Wear Lighter Clothing

It often can be helpful to wear lighter, loose-fitting clothing during the summer to help ease the effects of the heat.

Lighter colors tend to absorb less of the sun’s energy and loose clothing can allow airflow around your body (allowing sweat to evaporate and cool you down).

5. Double Check Your AC System (Or Have Your HVAC Contractor Help)

While the above tips are handy when you’re traveling with your family this summer, one great way to make sure you stay cool is to have your home’s air conditioning unit checked out by a local HVAC company.

It can be devastating to get home after a family outing only to find out your HVAC system is having issues.

Signing up for a preventative maintenance plan is a great way to catch issues before they happen, so be sure to consider signing up for one this summer (if you haven’t already).

Be sure to check out our tips on reducing excess humidity in your home as well.

Yes, it’s hot here in the Lowcountry — but that doesn’t mean you can’t live comfortably while you’re out and about.

With a little planning, and some help from your local, family-friendly HVAC company you’ll be able to stay cool (and be kind) in the Charleston area this year.
